"As Is Now" finds Paul Weller plugging in and turning up the volume louder than he has in years. As the voice of punk legends The Jam, Weller influenced virtually every U.K. band that followed. The Jam's popularity is legendary; they once reached #21 on the U.K. charts without even releasing the single in that country (it was driven there based solely on imports from Germany). One listen to "From the Floorboards Up," the first single off "As Is Now," makes it clear this album is a departure from his recent acoustic-oriented releases. Music Week declares, "['From the Floorboards Up'] comes out of nowhere and it is 2 minutes 27 seconds of edgy malevolent rock'n'roll. Tweedy and co. know how to write gentle, heartfelt songs while adding just the right amount of unusual synth additions. The second half of the record ends INCREDIBLY strongly.
